    About the New Medicine Service

    If you've just been prescribed a medicine for a long-term condition, the New Medicine Service gives you extra support while you get started.

    Across a few short appointments, your pharmacist will answer questions, help with any problems, and work with your GP if needed.

    Who Is This For?

    Free NHS support for patients starting new long-term medicines

    People in England starting a new medicine for a long-term condition (NHS service).

    Parents/carers can take part on behalf of children or those who can't consent themselves.

    Conditions Covered

    Typical conditions covered:

    Asthma, COPD
    Type 2 diabetes
    High blood pressure (hypertension)
    High cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia)
    Osteoporosis, Gout, Glaucoma
    Epilepsy, Parkinson's disease
    Urinary incontinence or retention
    Heart failure, Coronary heart disease, Atrial fibrillation, Acute coronary syndromes
    Stroke/TIA
    Long-term risk of blood clots (e.g. DVT/VTE)

    How It Works

    Three simple steps to get the support you need

    Sign up when you collect

    When your new medicine is dispensed, we'll invite you to join the service (or you may be referred). We'll agree the best time and method for follow-up.

    2

    Intervention (7–14 days)

    A focused chat in the pharmacy or by phone/video to check how you're getting on, answer questions and tackle any problems.

    3

    Follow-up (14–21 days after intervention)

    We review progress, give any extra advice and, if needed, liaise with your GP.
