Wegovy Tablets (Oral Semaglutide)Now In Stock in Cramlington

The wait is over — Wegovy tablets, the UK's first licensed weight loss pill, are now available and in stock at Northumbria Way Pharmacy & Clinic in Cramlington.

Wegovy tablets contain oral semaglutide, the same clinically proven active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, in a once-daily tablet — a needle-free option for weight management. Approved by the UK medicines regulator (MHRA) in June 2026, they are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above with a weight-related health condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. All four strengths are stocked at our Cramlington clinic.

What Are Wegovy Tablets and How Do They Work?

Wegovy tablets are the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed in the UK for weight management. They contain semaglutide — the same GLP-1 receptor agonist as the Wegovy injection — which mimics a natural gut hormone released after eating.

As set out in the product's Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC), semaglutide acts on appetite centres in the brain to reduce hunger and cravings, increases feelings of fullness, and slows stomach emptying so smaller meals satisfy you for longer. The result is that eating less feels natural rather than a constant battle with hunger.

Because semaglutide is a peptide that would normally be broken down in the gut, the tablet is formulated with an absorption enhancer and must be taken in a specific way: once daily, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, with a small sip of water (no more than about half a glass), then waiting at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other medicines. Taken correctly, it delivers results approaching those of the weekly injection — we go through the routine with you in detail at your consultation.

    • The UK's first and only licensed oral GLP-1 weight loss tablet
    • Same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection — no needles required
    • Once-daily morning routine, taken on an empty stomach
    • Not the same as Rybelsus, which is a lower-dose oral semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss

The Research and Evidence Behind Wegovy Tablets

The licence for Wegovy tablets is based on the OASIS clinical trial programme. In the pivotal OASIS 4 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, adults taking oral semaglutide 25mg once daily alongside lifestyle support lost an average of around 17% of their body weight over 64 weeks, with roughly 1 in 4 participants losing 20% or more.

That makes the tablet broadly comparable to the weekly Wegovy 2.4mg injection in clinical effect — a genuine first for a weight loss pill. For someone weighing 15 stone, an average 17% loss is around 2.5 stone. As with the injections, progress is steady rather than sudden: a typical, realistic expectation is around half a stone in the first few months while the dose builds up, with continued loss at the 25mg maintenance dose.

Trial participants also saw improvements in waist circumference, blood pressure and cholesterol. And as with every treatment we offer, the best results came when medication was paired with genuine changes to diet and activity — which our face-to-face coaching is designed to support.

Doses and How Treatment Is Built Up

Wegovy tablets come in four strengths. You start on the lowest dose and step up roughly every 30 days, giving your body time to adjust and keeping side effects to a minimum. Every increase happens after review with our prescribing pharmacist.

    Dose / StrengthTypically usedNotes
1.5mg dailyDays 1–30Starting dose to build tolerance
    4mg dailyDays 31–60Gradual increase
    9mg dailyDays 61–90Gradual increase
25mg dailyFrom day 91Full maintenance dose

Each strength comes as a 30-tablet pack — one month of treatment. Take your tablet whole (don't split, crush or chew it) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, and wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines. If side effects are troublesome, we can keep you on a lower strength for longer.

    Side Effects and Safety

Side effects with Wegovy tablets are similar to other semaglutide medicines. Most are digestive, mild to moderate, and most noticeable when starting or increasing the dose, settling as your body adjusts.

Common side effects (usually mild and temporary)

    • Nausea (feeling sick) — the most common, usually easing within days to weeks
    • Diarrhoea or constipation
    • Vomiting or indigestion
    • Stomach (abdominal) pain, bloating, burping or wind
    • Headache, tiredness or dizziness
    • Reduced appetite (part of how the medicine works)

Less common but important — seek advice promptly

    • Severe, persistent stomach pain (with or without vomiting) — possible pancreatitis; stop treatment and seek urgent medical help
    • Gallstones or gallbladder problems — pain in the upper right stomach, fever or yellowing of the skin/eyes
    • Severe dehydration from prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, which can affect the kidneys — keep drinking fluids
    • Low blood sugar, mainly if combined with certain diabetes medicines such as insulin or sulfonylureas
    • Wegovy tablets must not be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — tell us if you are planning a pregnancy
    • Absorption can be affected by other morning medicines — levothyroxine in particular needs a tailored plan, which we'll set up for you

This is a summary, not a complete list — full details are in the patient information leaflet and the Summary of Product Characteristics, which we review with you. Because the tablet's effectiveness depends on taking it correctly, our pharmacist support makes a real difference to both safety and results.

How Our Prescribing Pharmacist Keeps You Safe

A weight loss pill is only as good as the way it's used. Oral semaglutide has a strict morning routine, specific interactions to manage and a structured dose build-up — exactly the things a face-to-face, prescribing pharmacist-led clinic is built for.

    Full suitability assessment

Before prescribing we review your BMI, medical history and medicines, and help you decide between tablets, Wegovy injections and Mounjaro based on your health and preferences.

    Getting the routine right

We walk you through the empty-stomach morning routine — timing, water volume and the 30-minute wait — because taking the tablet correctly is what makes it work.

    Managing other morning medicines

We build a practical plan around anything else you take in the morning, such as thyroid medicines, so nothing clashes and nothing loses effectiveness.

    Structured dose escalation

We follow the licensed 4-step schedule, moving you up only when you're ready and slowing the build-up if side effects need more time to settle.

    Ongoing monitoring and follow-up

Regular reviews track your weight, side effects and progress, with blood pressure checks available on site at the pharmacy.

    Face-to-face coaching

Real accountability and practical diet and lifestyle support at the pharmacy — because the trial results were achieved alongside lifestyle change, not instead of it.
