Wegovy Tablets vs Wegovy Injections: Which Is Right for You?

Until this summer, choosing Wegovy meant choosing a needle. Now that Wegovy tablets are licensed in the UK and in stock at our Cramlington clinic, patients across Northumberland and Newcastle have a genuine choice: the same proven medicine, semaglutide, as a once-weekly injection or a once-daily pill.

As a prescribing pharmacist-led clinic offering both, we're asked "which one should I go for?" every day. The honest answer is that it depends on your results priorities, your daily routine and your feelings about injections. Here's the comparison we walk through with patients.

The headline results

Both formats are backed by major published trials. The weekly 2.4mg injection achieved around 15% average body weight loss over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial, with about 1 in 3 participants losing 20% or more. The 25mg daily tablet achieved around 17% average loss over 64 weeks in OASIS 4, with roughly 1 in 4 losing 20% or more.

Those numbers come from different trials with different participants, so they can't be compared head-to-head — the fair summary is that the results are broadly comparable, and both are transformative compared with dieting alone. Whichever you choose, a sensible early expectation is around half a stone in the first few months as your dose builds, with steady continued loss after that.

The daily reality: routines compared

This is where the real difference lies, and where the right answer varies person to person.

• Injection: once a week, any time of day, with or without food. A very fine needle in a pre-filled pen — most patients say it's far easier than they feared. Needs fridge storage before first use.
• Tablet: every morning, on a completely empty stomach, with only a small sip of water, then a 30-minute wait before breakfast, coffee or other medicines. No needles, no fridge, easy to travel with.
• Forgetful with daily routines? The weekly injection may suit you better — a missed tablet routine done wrongly (with food, or too much water) simply doesn't absorb properly.
• Structured morning person, or needle-averse? The tablet slots neatly into your routine and removes the injection barrier entirely.

Side effects and safety

Because both contain semaglutide, side effects are similar: nausea, and digestive symptoms like constipation or diarrhoea are the most common, especially when starting or increasing doses, and usually settle as your body adjusts. The injection can additionally cause minor injection-site reactions; the tablet's absorption rules mean other morning medicines need managing.

The serious-but-rare risks — pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, dehydration from prolonged vomiting — are the same for both, and neither can be used in pregnancy.
